Leprosy is believed to have originated in the Indian Subcontinent, the evidence of which comes from a 4,000-year-old human skeleton uncovered in India in 2009. As of 2021-22, the number of leprosy cases in India is 75, 394, accounting for 53.6 % of the world’s leprosy cases.
